The InCHIANTI has been always conducted in the 2 different sites, Greve in Chianti and Bagno a Ripoli in dedicated places close to the neighbourhood of the enrolled population thanks to the collaboration with the Municipalities.

The baseline study was supported as a “targeted project” (ICS110.1/RF97.71) by the Italian Ministry of Health in 1997 to determine the “Role of sarcopenia in the functional decline in the elderly: from biology of aging to strategy of intervention”. The study was also partly supported by the U.S. National Institute on Aging (Contracts: 263 MD 9164 and 263 MD 821336). I.N.R.C.A. provided the technical and scientific support to conduct the baseline survey.

The home interviews were 1453 (1150 in subjects aged ≥ 65ys) with a the response rate of 91,6%.
